An Italian region that has hardly been in the spotlight yet is Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Unjustly so, as it is a fascinating region with an atmosphere all its own. The region borders the Veneto region within Italy and Austria and Slovenia outside Italy. The somewhat complicated name for the region is self-explanatory. Friuli derives from the Latin name Forum Julii, which was founded by the emperor Julius Caesar. The word Forum Julii means 'market' or 'square' of Julius in Latin. Venezia stands for Venice (formerly a great ruler in the region) and Giulia stands for the Julian Alps to the north, the 'Alpi Giulie'. It is one of Italy's five autonomous regions, which means, among other things, an extra say in its own governance and financial policies. In terms of surface area, the relatively small region features mountains in the north, hills in the centre and flat land on the coast. There are also beautiful lakes. The region gained some attention in the Netherlands at the turn of the century, when politician Pim Fortuin owned a holiday home there and was reburied there after his assassination in 2002. The capital Trieste, located near the border with Slovenia, is a beautiful and pleasant student city. Udine, with its beautiful Venetian-style squares and buildings, is also a special city. On the coast there are many seaside resorts with beautiful sandy beaches, such as Lignano Sabbiadoro and Grado, but also rocky beaches, such as in Sistiana and Trieste. To the north are the Carnic Alps, a rugged mountain range inviting for hiking or winter sports.
When it comes to real estate, there are interesting opportunities in Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Because the region is not yet very well known, prices are still relatively favourable by northern Italian standards. On the coast, many apartments and detached houses, with or without sea view, can be found. Many Italians have second homes here themselves. Inland, you will find many smaller towns with nice houses in and around the centre and in the mountains, you will find chalets and apartments for a winter sports holiday.
As in most coastal regions, apartments and villas by the sea are more expensive in Friuli-Venezia Giulia than inland. Habitable apartments and smaller houses on the coast start from around €300,000. Flats with good sea views from €500,000 and large penthouses with top views start at 1 million. Inland, there are village houses and refurbishable or non-refurbishable detached houses from around €100,000. From €500,000 you can buy a nice detached house with pool here. Seaside villas with pool and sea views start at around one and a half million.
